National basketball team routes Japan in William Jones Cup

TEHRAN, Jul. 30 (MNA) – Iran’s national basketball outfit overwhelmed Japan in their seventh encounter at the 2016 William Jones Cup underway in Taiwan.

Iranian basketball players celebrated their fifth victory at the eminent sportive tournament by breezing past Japan 73-65 in a breath-taking match held today at Hsinchuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City of Taiwan.

The Persians had previously bagged three straight wins over Taiwan B, the US representative Sacramento as well as Egypt before conceding two defeats against South Korea and Taiwan A teams.

After suffering the two losses, the Iranian outfit pulled out a sweeping victory over the Philippines on Friday.

Led by Mehran Shahintab, Iran’s national team is scheduled to compete its eighth showdown against the Indian team on Sunday.

The 38th William Jones Cup international basketball tournament, is underway in New Taipei, Taiwan, from July 23 to 31.

R. William Jones Cup (also known as the Jones Cup) is an international basketball tournament held annually since 1977 in Taipei, Taiwan. It was named in honor of basketball promoter Renato William Jones, who was one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
